In a recent study published in The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, researchers identified the top selection criteria orthopedic fellowship directors consider when choosing fellows.
From one to five, one being the most important, 193 orthopedic fellowship program directors ranked the importance of selection criteria.
The most important criteria for selecting a candidate to interview:
• Letter of recommendation from subspecialty faculty: 1.38 points
• Quality of residency program: 2.02 points
• Letter of recommendation from residency program director: 2.12 points
The most important criteria for selecting a fellow after the interview:
• Interview: 1.17 points
• Letter of recommendation from subspecialty faculty: 1.46 points
• Expressed interest in the program: 2.16 points
• Letter of recommendation from residency program director: 2.16 points
