Several North American leaders in hockey have joined to create the Hockey Safety Panel in an effort to strengthen communication surrounding safety issues, including concussion awareness and neck injury prevention, according to a Bauer Hockey news release.

Bauer Hockey initiated the panel, which includes members from the United States and Canada. Ken Covo, senior director of research and development for Bauer Hockey, will co-chair the safety panel with Larry Weber, Bauer's director of risk management.

Other panel members include Lisa Fischer, MD, director of primary care sports medicine at the Fowler Kennedy Sports Medicine Clinic, Mark Lovell, PhD, of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's concussion program and co-creator of the ImPACT test for concussion evaluation, Todd Jackson, senior manager for insurance and member services at Hockey Canada and Glenn Riefenstahl, ATC, head athletic trainer for the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team.

The panel will gather several times throughout the year and publish information regarding hockey safety. The panel will also examine current safety standards and guidelines and recommend changes.
