Stem Cell Therapy Research for Osteoarthritis Will Be Conducted in the UK

Spinal Tech

Arthritis Research UK has funded a year-long trial which mixes stem cells with cartilage cells to further research osteoarthritis treatment options, according to a BBC News report.

Keele University scientists will study up to 70 people during the trial, which will be run at Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry, Shorpshire. The randomized treatment will examine patients receiving the stem cell and cartilage injection as compared with those receiving only a cartilage or only stem cell injections. The scientists are testing effectiveness of all three injections based on the quality of the new cartilage formed during the 12 month period.

The treatment will be tested on knee joints but could also provide treatment to additional joints after further development.
