The National Science Foundation has granted funding for a research project which will explore infection-resistant orthopedic implants, according to a news release from the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J.
Woo Young Lee, PhD, and Hongjun Wang, PhD, professors from the Stevens Institute of Technology, will conduct the project, titled "Evaporation Assembly of Drug-Eluting Bioresorbable Nanocomposite Micropatterns."
The research will focus on "biofilm formation," a means of preventing bacterial infection of implants by using an inkjet printing of drug-eluting, bioresorbably micropatterns onto the implant's surface. Project results will be used in designing future implant surfaces for infection prevention.
In addition to the research, the NSF grant will be used to support interdisciplinary training of one doctoral and 12 undergraduate students at the Stevens Institute of Technology.
