Biomet reported its net income at $31.1 million for the first quarter of 2014, despite spine sales coming in 6.6 percent lower than the same period last year. The company's first quarter ended Aug. 31. During the first quarter last year, Biomet lost $31.5 million.
Sports, extremities and trauma devices brought much of this year's profit; the segment earned $149.5 million this year, up 17.4 percent from 2012. Knees were also profitable, bringing in $225.1 million or 3.5 percent more than last year.
