Medtronic has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Carlsbad, Calif.-based device company RF Surgical Systems for about $235 million.
Here are six things to know:
1. RF Surgical Systems focuses on the detection and prevention of retained surgical items, such as sponge, gauze or towel.
2. The RF Surgical system is designed to be used as an adjunct to manual counting methods to help prevent surgical sponge-related events where items are left inside patients after wound closure.
3. Using a low radio frequency signal, the system is designed to track and detect surgical gauze, sponges and towels (embedded with a RF tag) through blood, dense tissue and bone.
4. The system aims to reduce patient complications due to surgery, lessen unnecessary procedures, and increase efficiencies within the operating room.
5. Medtronic will report the RF Surgical business as part of its Surgical Solutions division within the Minimally Invasive Technologies Group.
6. Pending regulatory approvals, the deal is expected to close in August 2015.
