Spinal Tech

Emerging Implant Technologies acquired a portfolio of patents from Morgan P. Lorio, MD, of Nashville, Tenn.-based Hughston Clinic Orthopaedics.

Here are five key points:

1. The portfolio includes 22 issued and pending patents for 3-D printed expandable spinal fusion cages.

2. The patents, active in the U.S., Europe and other global markets, are for vertical and lateral expansion technology.

3. EIT plans to leverage this technology to enhance its cellular titanium cages.

4. Dr. Lorio holds certifications in spine, orthopedics and hand surgery.

5. He specializes in cervical spine pathology of the upper extremity, artificial discs, motion preservation and minimally invasive spine surgery. Dr. Lorio also has expertise in the female spine, like sacroiliac joint disease and vertebral augmentation.

"The combination of 3-D-printed cellular structures with functionality is disruptive game changing technology. It will give me better tools to restore my patients' spinal balance and enlarge the cage footprints for better endplate coverage while experiencing faster spinal fusion," said Dr. Lorio.
