Medtronic, UnitedHealth value-based partnership shows reduced costs & hospital admissions: 5 notes

Spinal Tech

UnitedHealth and Medtronic formed a value-based partnership in 2017 focused on delivering patient-centered solutions to improve outcomes while managing costs.

Here are five notes:

1. The partnership gave UnitedHealthcare members with diabetes access to Medtronic's advanced insulin pump technologies, including the MiniMed(TM) 630G.

2. More than 6,000 UnitedHealth members were given Medtronic's MiniMed 630G insulin pump. After the first year with the pump, members experienced 27 percent fewer preventable hospital admissions compared to plan members who received multiple daily injections.

3. Medtronic and UnitedHealth plan to continue the multiyear initiative. They will evaluate quality of care and costs, and enroll UnitedHealth members in initiatives to reduce costs while improving health.

4. Over the past three years, UnitedHealthcare paid $65 billion to physicians and hospitals tied to value-based arrangements.

5. By 2020, UnitedHealthcare expects its value-based payments to top $75 billion.
