UCLA, Theseus AI sign license agreement for spine MRI technology

Spinal Tech

University of California Los Angeles signed a license agreement with Theseus AI — a Los Angeles-based startup — for software that interprets MRI scans of patients' spines.

Four things to know:

1. UCLA researchers created the technology, which uses artificial intelligence to decipher spinal MRI scans.

2. The software provides data that helps diagnose and treat back pain and helps identify candidates for spine surgery.

3. The Theseus team, led by neurosurgeon Luke Macyszyn, MD, of the UCLA Spine Center, developed the algorithm to provide measurements for spinal stenosis from MRIs.

4. Theseus AI plans to integrate the algorithm into picture archiving, communication systems and EHRs for radiologists, surgeons and primary care physicians.
