Johnson & Johnson reveals surgical robotics platform — 5 details

Spinal Tech

Johnson & Johnson unveiled its general surgical robotics platform, Ottava, on Nov. 19, according to Mass Device.

Five things to know:

1. Equipped with six arms that are integrated into the operating table, the Ottava system is designed to provide more control and flexibility in surgery without occupying additional space in the operating room.

2. Johnson & Johnson plans to begin verification and validation processes for Ottava in 2021, followed by enrollment in clinical trials in 2022.

3. Ottava will be powered by Johnson & Johnson's digital ecosystem and may eventually be combined with the FDA-cleared Monarch robotic surgical platform Johnson & Johnson acquired from Auris Health in 2019.

4. Frederic Moll, MD, serves as Johnson & Johnson's robotics chief development officer. Dr. Moll is an Intuitive Surgical co-founder who joined Johnson & Johnson through its Auris Health acquisition.

5. The unveiling of Ottava was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic; Johnson & Johnson had originally been planning a robotic surgery reveal in May.
