Healthcare technology company Royal Philips has introduced its ClarifEye augmented reality system for minimally invasive spine surgery.
The device combines 2D and 3D visualizations at a low X-ray dose with 3D augmented reality. It is integrated into the Philips Azurion image-guided therapy platform, designed to improve navigation for pedicle screw placement and reduce the need for postoperative scans.
"In spine surgery, when you change your approach to a minimally invasive one, you also have to change the way you operate because you need another way to see inside the spine," Dr. Pietro Scarone, a Switzerland-based neurosurgeon, said in a Feb. 2 news release. "With ClarifEye, the technology adapts to the needs of the surgeon, rather than the surgeon adapting to the requirements of the technology."
ClarifEye is CE marked and pending FDA 510(k) approval, according to the company.
