Former Medtronic exec to lead Zimmer Biomet's spine spinoff

Spinal Tech

Vafa Jamali has been appointed CEO of NewCo, a new company that will be created by Zimmer Biomet spinning off its spine and dental businesses.

Mr. Jamali has more than 25 years of experience in the medical device industry, including 20 years in executive leadership roles.

He spent six years at Medtronic, where he served as senior vice president and president of early technologies and senior vice president and president of respiratory, gastrointestinal and informatics.

Prior to Medtronic, Mr. Jamali held leadership roles at Covidien, Cardinal Health and Baxter. Last year, he completed the Harvard Executive Leadership Program.

"I am looking forward to working closely with the new team to develop and drive investment strategies and a plan for long-term growth in the spine and dental markets — all with a relentless focus on delivering for patients, customers, team members and our future shareholders," Mr. Jamali said in a Feb. 15 news release.

The spinoff creates two independent, publicly traded companies: Zimmer Biomet, focused on orthopedics, and NewCo, focused on spine and dental.

The transaction is expected to close in mid-2022.
