Spinal Tech

Devicemaker Aurora Spine said March 29 that its Zip interspinous fixation device for patients with degenerative disc disease received approval for a multicenter study.

Five things to know:

1. Site selection for the 100-patient study has begun, with results of the study expected this year.

2. Zip has been used in more than 5,000 cases worldwide.

3. Aurora Spine recently conducted an advanced training session introducing the device to neurosurgical, orthopedic and pain management physicians.

4. "This therapy is a great opportunity to continue to bridge the gap between spine surgeons and pain management," said Steven Falowski, MD, director of functional neurosurgery at Argires-Marotti Neurosurgical Associates of Lancaster (Pa.).

5. The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board, an FDA-registered group that reviews biomedical research involving human subjects.
