Medtronic gets green light for AI-driven spinal rods

Spinal Tech

Medtronic's patient-specific UNiD Rods have been cleared for use with the devicemaker's CD Horizon, Solera, Voyager and Infinity OCT spinal systems, which comprise rod, hooks, screws and interbody fusion devices.

The UNiD rods are pre-bent before surgery to match a preoperative plan created with artificial intelligence technology, which is designed to precisely align patients' spines and reduce the risk of malalignment and associated revision surgeries, the company said in a June 3 news release.

The rods are intended to treat scoliosis, trauma, tumors and complex degenerative conditions in adults and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

Dan Wolf, vice president of Medicrea, within Medtronic's cranial and spinal technologies business, said the company is the first to provide a "fully integrated solution" — including personalized implants, AI-driven preoperative planning and surgical robots — to advance spine care.
