Five orthopedic device companies building new headquarters, manufacturing or innovation facilities this year:
1. Medtronic broke ground on a 400,000-square-foot innovation campus in Lafayette, Colo., in June. The company aims to move about 1,100 research and development and administrative employees from its Boulder and Louisville, Colo., facilities into the new location by the end of 2022.
2. Alphatec plans to lease a 75,000-square-foot facility this summer in Memphis, Tenn., to house its primary distribution operations. The facility will distribute Alphatec's high-volume, commercially launched products, expedite access to nearby distribution centers and facilitate surgical support.
3. Nexxt Spine broke ground in June on a 36,000-square-foot corporate headquarters expansion in Noblesville, Ind., which will bolster surgeon training and education and double in-house manufacturing capabilities.
4. Surgalign Spine Technologies purchased a medical device manufacturing facility in May to complement its Spine Innovation Center operations in San Diego. Surgalign is integrating its research and development operations with the facility to accelerate and expand new product development.
5. DiscGenics, a biopharmaceutical company focused on regenerative therapies for spinal conditions, completed construction on its 25,000-square-foot headquarters in Salt Lake City in February. The company added space for a manufacturing facility in anticipation of future commercial demand for IDCT, an allogeneic, injectable disc cell therapy for degenerative disc disease.
