How Stryker & Medtronic are expanding their scope beyond orthopedics, spine

Since Aug. 1, two device companies have made deals widening their scope beyond spine and orthopedics.

Stryker announced its acquisition of Gauss Surgical Sept. 7. Gauss developed the Triton artificial intelligence platform, which is designed to monitor blood loss in real time during surgery. Triton's technology has demonstrated improvements in maternal and surgical care through early recognition of hemorrhages.

Medtronic announced its plans to acquire Intersect ENT in a $1.1 billion deal Aug. 6. Intersect ENT is known for its Propel and Sinuva sinus implants. The acquisition will grow Medtronic's footprint in the ENT space and is expected to close by the end of Medtronic's current fiscal year.
