From an augmented reality robot to a "smart" orthopedic implant, here are four notable launches from the last three years:
1. Augmedics' Xvision augmented reality system was launched in December 2019 after receiving FDA clearance. The system, which gives surgeons a 3D visualization of the spine intraoperatively, has since been adopted at multiple hospitals and practices. In 2020, it was named one of the best inventions of the year by Time magazine.
2. Medtronic's Midas Rex high-speed drills were debuted in February 2021 after receiving FDA clearance in December 2020. The drills, integrated with the Mazor spine robot, are designed to improve precision, disc-prep access and navigation.
3. NuVasive's Pulse platform for spine surgery received FDA 510(k) approval and was launched in July 2021. Pulse is an integrated platform intended to increase safety and efficiency in spine surgery. The first commercial cases using Pulse were completed in September 2021.
4. Zimmer Biomet's PersonaIQ in August 2021 became the first "smart" implant for total knee replacements to be approved by the FDA. Surgeons at New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery completed the first case with the implant.
