A Connecticut orthopedic surgeon was fined $25,000 for operating on the wrong hip of a patient, the Hartford Courant reported Feb. 21.
Derek Shia, MD, of Hamden-based Connecticut Orthopedics, agreed to the fine and a reprimand as part of a consent order approved by the state Medical Examining Board.
In August 2019, Dr. Shia began operating on a patient's left hip before realizing he was supposed to treat the right hip. The error was discovered after a hip fracture was not seen on the left hip.
Dr. Shia repaired the left hip external rotators, which were detached, and finished surgery on the right hip, the report said.
