David Altchek, MD, performed knee surgery on Edwin Díaz, a pitcher for Major League Baseball's New York Mets, on March 16 in Florida.

Mr. Díaz suffered a complete tear of his patellar tendon in his right knee while celebrating a win during the World Baseball Classic, according to a March 16 report from mlb.com.

Dr. Altchek is an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. He also serves as the medical director for the Mets and is a medical consultant to the National Basketball Association.

The surgery has an expected recovery time of eight months, according to general manager Billy Eppler, likely causing Mr. Díaz to miss the entirety of the 2023 MLB season.
