The 10 most injury-prone states

Maine has been named the most injury-prone state in the U.S., with the highest number of resident emergency room visits relative to its population size, according to research from pain management specialists New York Pain Care. 

The study, sent to Becker's on Dec. 4, used the latest available emergency room visit data from the American Hospital Association, workplace injury data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and ambulance call-out data from the National Association of State EMS Officials to determine the most injury-prone places. 

The 10 most injury-prone states: 

1. Maine

Emergency room visits per 1,000 residents: 596

Workplace injury cases per 1,000 full-time workers: 41

2. Louisiana 

Emergency room visits per 1,000 residents: 535

Workplace injury cases per 1,000 full-time workers: 16 

3. Kentucky 

Emergency room visits per 1,000 residents: 525

Workplace injury cases per 1,000 full-time workers: 26

4. West Virginia 

Emergency room visits per 1,000 residents: 524

Workplace injury cases per 1,000 full-time workers: 24

5. Ohio 

Emergency room visits per 1,000 residents: 505

Workplace injury cases per 1,000 full-time workers: 19

Emergency room visits per 1,000 residents: 485

Workplace injury cases per 1,000 full-time workers: N/A
