Scott Steinmann, MD, will lead the orthopedic surgery department at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine in Chattanooga.
Five key points:
1. Dr. Steinmann is set to assume the role in October. He will replace Richard Alvarez, MD, who served as chair for the past decade.
2. In the new role, Dr. Steinmann will serve as chief executive academic officer and oversee the department's educational programs, including the graduate, residency and continuing medical education programs.
3. Dr. Steinmann will also serve as a professor at UTHSC College of Medicine while continuing to practice at Erlanger Orthopedic Institute, where he performs a high volume of complex shoulder and elbow procedures. Erlanger Orthopaedic Institute has eight locations in and around Chattanooga.
4. Dr. Steinmann joins UTHSC from Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic, where he was a professor in the orthopedic surgery department. His tenure with Mayo Clinic spanned over two decades.
5. The College of Medicine is affiliated with Chattanooga-based Erlanger Health System.
"We are fortunate to have been able to recruit Dr. Steinmann," said R. Bruce Shack, MD, dean of the UTHSC College of Medicine in Chattanooga. "The role Dr. Steinmann will play will be critical in the continued growth of the orthopedic department, which is one of our strongest departments here in Chattanooga."
