Wilmington, N.C.-based New Hanover Regional Medical Center's certificate of need application to build a 66-bed hospital has been approved by state regulators.
North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services originally denied the application in February, outlining that the hospital did not adequately make its case for the additional beds. The state however approved the application after the medical center filed an appeal.
The planned Scotts Hill Community Hospital, a $210 million project with eight operating rooms, will build onto NHRMC North's emergency department, according to the report.
Thirty of the hospital's proposed 66 beds will be relocated from NHRMC's orthopedic hospital campus, which is set to scrap inpatient services when the new hospital is built.
NHRMC was a county-owned hospital that Charlotte, N.C.-based Novant Health purchased in February.
Construction is expected to begin in 2022, with the hospital opening in 2024.
