Private equity firms can inject significant capital into practices recovering from the pandemic, but terms of the deals often result in a loss of physician autonomy and decision-making.

However, private equity investment remains appealing for private practices that wish to not only maintain independence, but grow operations. The organizations may also provide useful insights from other industries that can help advance the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective care.

Here are nine private equity transactions in the orthopedics industry this year:

1. Trinity Hunt Partners teamed with Los Angeles Orthopaedic Surgery Specialists and Portland-based Northwest Extremity Specialists to form a musculoskeletal practice management platform.

2. Stone Point Capital invested in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.-based American Orthopedic Partners, with orthopedic surgeons James Andrews, MD, and Russell Warren, MD, joining the practice as board members.

3. Gainesville, Fla.-based practice management group Orthopedic Care Partners, backed by Varsity Healthcare Partners, affiliated with Motion Orthopedics in St. Louis.

4. Summit Spine & Joint Centers, a 21-provider group with ASCs and pain management clinics in the greater Atlanta area, was acquired by MSouth Equity Partners.

5. ArthroLense, a medical device company founded in 2019 by orthopedic surgeons Russell Nevins, MD, and David Backstein, MD, secured funding from Lynx Equity Limited.

6. U.S. Orthopedic Partners, a management services organization backed Thurston Group, acquired Jackson (Miss.) Anesthesia Pain Center and Oxford (Miss.) Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine.

7. Trivest Partners invested in Lexington, Ky.-based Bluegrass Orthopaedics, creating a nationally focused orthopedic management services organization. Bluegrass Orthopaedics anchors Trivest's orthopedic platform.

8. Life Spine secured investment from Granite Creek Capital Partners, which will help the implant manufacturer accelerate growth initiatives. Mark Radzik, managing partner of Granite Creek Capital Partners, is serving on Life Spine's board of directors.

9. Allscripts Healthcare Solutions partnered with Castleford Capital-backed U.S. Orthopedic Alliance to support growth initiatives with orthopedic practices.
