Abrazo West Campus in Goodyear, Ariz., has performed more than 100 complex spinal fusions with the ExcelsiusGPS robot, which it installed one year ago, AZ Big Media reported Feb. 22.
Kenneth Hood, DO, one of three spine surgeons at Abrazo Spine Institute, has completed more than 120 procedures with the robot, which assists surgeons with the accurate implantation of pedicle screws in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine.
"A typical candidate would be someone requiring a fusion operation who is living with severe back and radiating leg pain that has failed non-operative treatment and is seeking improved quality of life with less pain," Dr. Hood said. "This technology can also be applied to spine trauma and spine tumor surgery."
ExcelsiusGPS has been used in nearly 30,000 procedures worldwide since it launched in 2017, according to Globus Medical, the system's developer. CEO Dave Demski said robotic utilization — the number of cases performed per installed robot — was at an all-time high in 2021.
