Pennsylvania hospital adds minimally invasive spine robot

Robotics

Bethlehem, Pa.-based St. Luke's University Health Network added Medtronic's Mazor X robotic system for minimally invasive spine surgery.

St. Luke's introduced the system in December. The robot uses GPS-like guidance, data analytics and real-time imaging for more precise surgery with less tissue disruption, according to a Feb. 28 news release.

St. Luke's neurosurgeon Justice Owusu-Agyei, MD, described the technology as "a game changer."

"Nothing beats safety in this surgery, and the Mazor X platform provides the highest level of operative precision and safety I have seen," he said in the release.
