Zimmer Launches Virage OCT Spinal Fixation System

Spinal Tech

Zimmer launched the Virage OCT Spinal Fixation System designed for posterior fixation surgery.

The Virage is an occipital-cervico-thoracic spinal fixation system that uses Zimmer's 360 decrees Omnidirectional Extreme-Angle Screw to bring a new experience to posterior fixation surgery. All Virage System polyaxial dual-lead screws incorporate the 360 degrees Omnidirectional Extreme-Angle Screw technology allowing for 112 degrees of conical range of motion and simple rod alignment.

The system also includes the proprietary friction-fit screw head that holds the desired rod in position.

"The Virage System's Omnidirectional Extreme-Angle Screw with Zimmer friction-fit technology dramatically simplifies implantation and rod alignment, allowing surgeons to increase procedural efficiency and overcome challenging patient anatomies during OCT fusion procedures," said Andrew Park, MD, director of the Dallas Spine and Reconstructive Fellowship at Baylor University and Methodist Hospital for Surgery in Dallas.

This launch is another exciting event for Zimmer, which launched the Optio-C Anterior Cervical System in April. The company also acquired Biomet in April for $10.35 billion in cash and $3 billion in Zimmer stock. Zimmer reported a 1 percent growth in the company's spine sales for the first quarter of 2014.

"Zimmer produced solid results during the first quarter, providing further validation of our long-term growth and stockholder value creation strategies," said David Dvorak, Zimmer president and CEO in the news release. "As we continue focus on the execution of our quality and operational excellence initiatives, we believe that the company is well positioned for continued growth in the evolving global healthcare landscape through the ongoing development and commercialization of innovative and clinically relevant solutions."
