Orthofix International, headquartered in Lewisville, Texas, released the results of its study on the effect of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy on gene expression of intervertebral discs cells in normal and inflammatory environments.
The Spine Journal published the study.
Here are five highlights:
1. The researchers concluded PEMF therapy may decrease cellular inflammation and degeneration connected with disc degeneration in IVD cells.
2. The study's results provide insight into PEMF having disease modifying activities that could offer a minimally-invasive solution for patients with degenerative disc disease.
3. Jeffrey C. Lotz, PhD, of University of California, San Francisco, and his team stimulated cells to create the inflammatory environment associated with degenerative disc disease. The cells underwent the Orthofix Physio-Stim PEMF for four hours every day.
4. Those cells exposed to PEMF demonstrated a decrease in pro-inflammatory marker, compared to the control group.
5. The FDA has approved the Orthofix Physio-Stim and Cervical-Stim PEMF technology.
