The Circuit Court of St. Louis (Mo.) County jury ruled in favor of Memphis, Tenn.-based Wright Medical Group following allegations that its metal-on-metal hip implant was defective, according to The National Law Journal.
Here are four things to know:
1. In the suit, the plaintiff claimed the medical device company defectively designed its ProFemur hip implant system and alleges Wright Medical failed to provide sufficient warnings about the device's possible failure.
2. While the plaintiff claimed the device caused him to develop a pseudotumor, Wright Medical said hypersensitivity was the reason for the pseudotumor. Additionally, the company claims the device had adequate warnings and the plaintiff's blood ions were within the normal range.
3. James Lightman, JD, general counsel for Wright Medical, said, "The jury was attentive, weighed the evidence carefully and recognized that implanting surgeons are well aware of the risks and benefits associated with various medical devices and attempt to provide the best device for each patient's particular clinical circumstances and lifestyle needs."
4. In other news, Wright Medical entered into a Master Settlement Agreement over litigation on its Hip Implant products last week. Wright and the lawyers representing the plaintiffs agreed to settle 1,292 revision claims concerning its Conserve, Dynasty or Lineage hip implants/ Wright will settle for up to $240 million with $180 million in cash and $60 million for insurance recoveries.
