Minnetonka, Minn.-based Zyga Technology reported 24-month results from its SImmetry Sacroiliac Joint Fusion System study.
The multisite study investigated long-term fusion and pain reduction in 18 patients undergoing SImmetry Sacroiliac Joint Fusion. Researchers evaluated patients at 12 months and 24 months for radiographic evidence of fusion post-SI joint fusion with decortication and bone grafting. Independent radiologists performed computed topography reviews.
Here are four takeaways:
1. At 24 months post-operation, 94 percent of the patients had evidence of bridging bone, with 83 percent considered solid fusion across the SI joint.
2. Of those patients with solid fusion, 88 percent of joints were fused within the area of decortication.
3. At 24 months, researchers also discovered a 73 percent reduction in average pain.
4. The study did not pinpoint any procedure- or device-related serious adverse events.
William W. Cross III, MD, of Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic, presented the data at the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery 2017 Annual Meeting, held from April 12 to 14 in Boca Raton, Fla.
"This study demonstrates the ability of the SImmetry system to achieve pain reduction comparable to other systems, while providing radiographically evident fusion as early as 12 months and increased fusion rates at 24 months," said Dr. Cross. "By supplementing fixation with decortication and bone grafting, I can be confident that my patients have the best possible foundation for biological fusion, and long-term relief."
