Spinal Tech

Smith & Nephew signed a three year partnership with Imperial College London to develop enhanced surgical techniques relating to ligament function, biomechanics and knee soft tissue injuries.

Here are five takeaways:

1. The partnership with the department of mechanical engineering at Imperial College London focuses on biomechanical research into extra-articular ligaments and their function.

2. Smith & Nephew hopes to gain valuable insight into the meniscus and how to approach various knee surgeries.

3. The partnership is funded by a $1 million grant from Smith & Nephew.

4. Andy Williams, lead surgical researcher at Imperial College London, said, "The partnership with Smith & Nephew is priceless for our work. It allows a strategic attack on the unanswered biomechanical issues in knee surgery. This is the best way to translate from the lab to patient care."

5. Recently, Smith & Nephew entered into a collaboration with the University of Hull in England to research approaches to advanced wound care.
