HoloSurgical completes 1st spine surgery using augmented reality, AI-based navigation system

Spinal Tech

Digital surgery company HoloSurgical performed its first spine procedure with the company's augmented reality and artificial intelligence-based surgical navigation system ARAI.

Four insights:

1. The lumbar decompression and fusion procedure was performed on a 61-year-old patient with grade 2 spondylolisthesis.

2. Designed to reduce operation time and surgical complications, the ARAI platform combines 3D visualization, data analytics and machine learning.

3. The system also features the ability to color code the patient's organs. Using AI to autonomously segment and analyze patient anatomy and identity, ARAI is designed so surgeons can clearly see the patient's color-coded organs as if they were not covered by skin, muscles and connective tissue.

4. During the lumbar decompression and fusion procedure, the system automatically identified relevant anatomical structures, color-coded them, presented a treatment plan and guided the surgeon to place the implant using augmented reality-based 3D visualization.
