UC San Diego Health invested in robotic technology for spine surgery, according to a Newswise report.
Four things to know:
1. The health system purchased the technology because it could lead to shorter operating times, less anesthesia, smaller incisions and reduced blood loss, according to UC San Diego Health neurosurgeon Martin Pham, MD.
2. UC San Diego Health purchased the Mazor X Stealth Addition, the result of Medtronic combining its Stealth technology with Mazor's robotic technology after Medtronic fully acquired Mazor earlier this year. The system offers 3D surgical planning, robotic guidance and intraoperative navigation.
3. UC San Diego Health spine surgeons have a history of treating complex patients, and incorporated technologies including the intraoperative MRI in surgical suites in 2016. The new robotic technology will complement existing technologies and procedures.
4. This is the first Mazor X Stealth Edition deployed in California.
