Johnson & Johnson subsidiary launches product for surgical bleeding: 5 things to know

Spinal Tech

Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Ethicon debuted its Vistaseal Fibrin Sealant, a product designed to help surgeons manage intraoperative bleeding.

Five things to know:

1. Vistaseal contains a combination of fibrinogen and thrombin, which are clotting proteins found in human plasma.

2. The product rapidly forms an adherent and durable clot when applied to the bleeding site.

3. Vistaseal can sustain hemostasis in high-risk patients and was associated with a lower overall hemostatic retreatment rate compared to standard treatments in three randomized, controlled trials.

4. Delivered in prefilled syringes, Vistaseal is designed for use in both open and minimally invasive procedures.

5. This is the first product to come from Ethicon's partnership with Grifols, which developed the Vistaseal Fibrin Sealant and licensed it to Ethicon.
