Spine device company Alphatec has reported that physicians have completed more than 500 prone transpsoas surgeries in the U.S., and the company aims to launch the procedure early in the fourth quarter, according to an Oct. 6 news release.
Three things to know:
1. The prone transpsoas technique uses the benefits of the lateral approach to treat a range of spinal pathologies.
2. The novel procedure places the patient in the prone position to mitigate some of the challenges that have limited the adoption of lateral spinal fusion.
3. The technique is intended to minimize patient repositioning, reduce OR time and achieve more reproducible spinal alignment objectives, according to Alphatec.
"Prone patient positioning is not only more familiar to spine surgeons, it also enables a consistent orthogonal surgical approach that improves predictability and surgical reproducibility," said CEO Pat Miles. "The result is an approach that is more accessible and capable of addressing the entire market for lumbar surgery, not just lateral fusion procedures."
