Is Zimmer Biomet well-positioned in 2022? 4 notes

Spinal Tech

Zimmer Biomet's business saw strong performances in 2021 with revenue increases. The company also made moves to grow in the spine and orthopedic spaces.

Here are four things to know going into 2022:

1. Zimmer Biomet's revenues were largely consistent through the first three quarters of 2021. First-quarter net sales of $1.8 billion and second-quarter net sales were $2 billion. The third-quarter figure was $1.9 billion, a 0.3 percent year-over-year decrease.

2. Spine and dental sales saw consistent year-over-year growth through the first half of 2021. First-quarter increases in that segment were 12.1 percent, and 73.1 percent in the second quarter. Third-quarter spine and dental sales dipped 5.8 percent.

3. Zimmer Biomet is honing in on its spine business with ZimVie, a spine and dental spinoff company. The spinoff was announced in February 2021, and in September, several executives were named.

4. The company is strengthening its knee portfolio with the PersonaIQ implant. The device has a smart sensor that shares data on step counts, range of motion and other indicators of knee function after surgery. New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery physicians performed the first case with the implant.
