Stryker, Zimmer Biomet and DePuy Synthes are key players in the orthopedic medical device space.

Here is how they stack up in seven areas:

1. Finances

DePuy Synthes: $2.2 billion in orthopedic sales in first quarter 2022 sales; DePuy Synthes parent company Johnson & Johnson has $23.4 billion in sales total in the same quarter.

Stryker: $4.3 billion in first quarter 2022 sales

Zimmer Biomet: $1.7 billion in first quarter 2022 sales

2. Number of employees

DePuy Synthes: DePuy Synthes' parent company, Johnson & Johnson has about 141,700 employees, according to its 2021 annual report. Employment numbers for DePuy Synthes weren't reported. 

Stryker: 46,000 employees worldwide in 2021

Zimmer Biomet: 19,500 as of Dec. 31 2021

3. Leaders

DePuy Synthes: Joaquin Duato, CEO of Johnson & Johnson,replaced Alex Gorsky in 2022.

Stryker: Kevin Lobo became CEO in October 2012 and board chair in July 2014.

Zimmer Biomet: Bryan Hanson became president, CEO and a member of the board of directors in December 2017.

DePuy Synthes: The Velys robot provides insights before, during and after surgery and is commonly used for total joint replacements.  

Stryker: Stryker's Mako robotic arm is used for total knee, total hip and partial knee replacements. It uses 3D imaging to create patient-specific surgery plans.

Zimmer Biomet: The Rosa knee system is used for total knee replacements and uses dynamic tracking and real-time data to assist surgeons. 

7. Notable news in 2022

DePuy Synthes: In March, DePuy Synthes acquired CrossRoads Extremity Systems. The acquisition added to DePuy Synthes' foot and ankle portfolio.

Stryker: Stryker is extending its reach in the medtech industry with the $3.1 billion acquisition of Vocera Communications. Stryker is also closing its Lakeland, Fla., production facility by the end of next year, and 88 employees are expected to be laid off by the end of May.

Zimmer Biomet: Zimmer Biomet completed the spinoff of its spinal and dental company ZimVie March 1.
