5 orthopedic devices getting insurance, CMS boosts in 2022

Spinal Tech

CMS and insurers are recognizing spine and orthopedic technologies by creating CPT codes and coverage policies. These actions pave the way for patient access to those devices.

Here are five spine and orthopedic products drawing eyes from CMS and insurers this year:

1. A category 3 CPT code for sacroiliac joint fusion was created and will be published as part of the 2023 CPT code set.

2. Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield will cover ZimVie's Tether device to treat pediatric scoliosis. The insurer's positive medical policy decision applies to anterior vertebral body tethering and went into effect July 6.

3. CMS granted an outpatient code for Stryker's InSpace balloon implant. The CMS code will cover outpatient hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers.

4. A third-party payer established positive coverage for one- and two- level lumbar disc replacement with Centinel Spine's Prodisc L.

5. Devicemaker 3Spine's Motus device was assigned a CPT code in January.
