Dr. Pierce Nunley debuts BowTie SI joint fusion system in US

Spinal Tech

Pierce Nunley, MD, performed the first U.S. case with Sail Fusion's BowTie sacroiliac joint fusion system, the devicemaker said June 12.

The system earned FDA clearance in April and is the first SI fusion technology based on validated joint fusion principles set by the AO Foundation. Dr. Nunley's first case was completed June 11 at The Spine Center of Excellence in Shreveport, La., according to a news release.

"It directly addresses the joint decortication of the sacrum and ilium with good bleeding bone for early osseointegration," Dr. Nunley said in the release. "Then placing a device that really has three biomechanical fixations: one is the BowTie that creates an interlocking fixation, two is the iliac screw, and three is the transfixation screw that crosses the ilium and into the sacrum."

The debut surgery is the start of the company's limited commercial release for the system.
