5 medtech notes: Stryker, Medtronic and more

From new leadership and expansions, here are five key updates from spine and orthopedic devicemakers since Sept. 11.

1. Medical devicemaker Medtronic appointed James Porter, MD, as chief medical officer of robotic surgical technologies and digital technologies within the company's surgical business.

2. OrthoPediatrics is launching an enabling technologies division, led by Kevin Unger. The company has its eyes on developing two new platforms, according to a news release. Playbook will be a surgical workflow platform to enhance surgical planning.

3. Neo Medical, a spine company with an augmented reality platform, raised $68 million in a series B financing round. Funds will help boost marketing with an immediate focus on growing the U.S. business. Neo Medical focuses on thoracolumbar fusion, and its Advise AR platform leverages artificial intelligence.

4. Stryker completed its acquisition of care.ai, a virtual care company. The acquisition will bolster Stryker's healthcare IT offerings and its wireless medical device portfolio. Care.ai develops artificial intelligence-assisted virtual care workflows and smart room technology. 

5. Eminent Spine's scoliosis deformity pedicle screw system, which consists of rods, polyaxial screws with set caps and cross connectors with locking screws, has earned FDA clearance.
