Teligen vs. Holo Portal vs. Pulse: How 3 spine platforms compare

Spinal Tech

A new spine platform, DePuy Synthes' Teligen, is set to hit the market in 2022. Here's how it compares to two other spine platforms from NuVasive and Surgalign.

Teligen (DePuy Synthes)

1. Teligen earned FDA clearance Oct. 20 for minimally invasive surgical transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion.

2. It comprises a tower with a camera control system, a VueLIF-T procedure kit, a Teligen clear discectomy device and patient-based disposable ports.

3. Teligen integrates with the Unleash portfolio of implants.

4. The system's Teligen Vue camera eliminates the need for a microscope and gives an unobstructed view of the surgical site.

5. A small cadaver study found Teligen reduces fluoroscopy time by 47 percent compared to MIS-TLIF cases performed with a surgical microscope. It also reduces instrument trays and processing costs.

Holo Portal (Surgalign)

1. Holo Portal combines artificial intelligence and augmented reality guidance in spine surgery.

2. It received FDA clearance for lumbar spine procedures in January.

3. The first procedure using Holo Portal was completed in May at Carmel-based Indiana Spine Hospital.

4. Holo Portal processes intraoperative imaging to plan pedicle screw trajectories and displays anatomy pinpoints using AR.

5. Surgalign President and CEO Terry Rich said in an August earnings call that the company plans to have Holo Portal at 10 to 15 sites by 2023.

Pulse (NuVasive)

1. Pulse is an integrated platform that incorporates two fixed screens, wireless device connectivity and several software technologies. It is designed for increased efficiency in operating rooms.

2. The platform earned FDA clearance in July 2021.

3. The first commercial cases using Pulse were completed in Ohio and Texas.

4. In May, NuVasive CEO Chris Barry said Pulse surpassed 500 cases. NuVasive is also working on projects to integrate Pulse with robotics and create new applications for it.
