Behrooz A. Akbarnia, MD, is the medical director of the San Diego Center for Spinal Disorders and is a clinical professor in the orthopedic surgery department at the University of California San Diego. He is an active member of the American Orthopedic Association, Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America and North American Spine Society. He has served as president of the Scoliosis Research Society in 2005 to 2006. He is also the founder of Growing Spine Foundation, an organization that supports research and educational activities in the field of spine.
Dr. Akbarnia is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He specializes in bone marrow inflammation osteomyelitis, fractures, cervical herniated discs, degenerative spine, kyphosis and lumbar degenerative disc disease.
Dr. Akbarnia has received a number of awards and honors during his career, including the Orthopedic Educational Achievement Award from the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the Goldstein Award for the Best Clinical Exhibit from the Scoliosis Research Society. He was also awarded the Walter P. Blount Humanitarian Award at the Scoliosis Research Society Meeting in 2008.
Dr. Akbarnia earned his medical degree Tehran University Medical School in Iran. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center. He has also completed John H. Moe Scoliosis Fellowship Program at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
