Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Chris Shaffrey of the University of Virginia School of Medicine

Christopher Shaffrey, MD, is the spine division director and professor of neurological surgery at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville.  He previously served as senior staff in the department of neurological surgery and orthopedic surgery at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, where he was also involved in treating collegiate and professional athletes.

Later, Dr. Shaffrey became an associate professor of neurological surgery and adjunct associate professor of orthopedic surgery and sports medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle before joining the University of Virginia. He has an active research interest in spine surgery, particularly in mulitcenter outcomes research for pediatric and adult scoliosis, spinal trauma and spinal column tumors.

 

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Shaffrey is on the editorial board of the Journal of Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery and Journal of Spinal Disorders. He is also a reviewer for Spine and The Spine Journal. Throughout his career, Dr. Shaffrey authored more than 100 publications and gave more than 500 national and international presentations.

 

Dr. Shaffrey has been the recipient of the Counsel of State Neurosurgical Societies Young Neurosurgeons Award and served as the chair for the AANS/CNS Joint Section of Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves.

 

Dr. Shaffrey earned his medical degree at the University of Virginia, where he also completed residencies in orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery. His additional training includes a fellowship in pediatric and adult reconstructive spine surgery.
