Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Duane Pitt of Desert Institute for Spine Disorders

Duane D.H. Pitt, MD, serves as president Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Desert Institute for Spine Disorders. Since 2006, he has also served as spine service medical director for Scottsdale Healthcare. He currently consults on sports-related spine injuries for the Phoenix Suns, San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Dr. Pitt has been involved in a number of humanitarian efforts during the course of his career. In September 2010, he was the first spine surgeon to support the Surgical Humanitarian Mission co-sponsored by Fundación HOMS and Friends of Dominium Republic. He sits on the board for the International Surgical Foundation. He is also an Aerospace Medicine Flight Surgeon for the California Air National Guard. He currently holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and is the Commander of the 129th Medical Group.

 

Dr. Pitt's clinical interests include scoliosis, trauma, spine deformity reconstruction, minimally invasive spinal surgery and sports-related spinal injuries. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

 

Dr. Pitt earned his medical degree at University of California at Irvine School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Loma Linda (Calif.) University Medical Center and his spine fellowship at University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
