Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Robert Banco of Boston Spine Group

Robert Banco, MD, is a spine care provider at Boston Spine Group and an associate clinical professor in the orthopedic surgery department at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. He also provides care at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Mass. From 1997 to 2007, Dr. Banco was spine section chief in the department of orthopedic surgery at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston.

Dr. Banco is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, North American Spine Society and New England Spine Study Group. He also serves on the faculty of the Society of Lateral Access Surgery, an organization that aims to foster research, training initiatives and peer-to-peer communication to advance lateral access surgery and, in particular, the XLIF approach. The organization was created by and is solely funded by NuVasive.

 

Dr. Banco's research interests include the outcome of lumbar fusions, cervical and lumbar interbody fusion devices, bone graft substitutes and image-guided surgery. He has received more than $1 million in grants for medical research. Over the course of his career, Dr. Banco has won numerous awards, including the 2010 Tufts Orthopedic Residency Teaching Award.

 

Dr. Banco earned his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester as well as a spine fellowship at the New England Baptist Hospital in Boston.
