Philadelphia Insurance Companies' Chairman Jamie Maguire and the McGuire Foundation gave $1 million to Philadelphia-based Thomas Jefferson University for a new orthopedic professorship.
The Sidney Kimmel Foundation Matching Program at Jefferson will match the $1 million donation dollar by dollar to create the James J. Maguire, Jr. Endowed Professorship for Spine Research.
Mr. Maguire holds a personal interest in orthopedic research, as he suffered from a cycling accident which left him paralyzed below the neck. After an emergency surgery performed by Jefferson's Rothman Institute surgeons, Mr. Maguire recovered and now has full motion in his neck.
Alex Vaccaro, MD, PhD, MBA leads the Jefferson's spine program and is the president of the Rothman Institute.
