The Norwich, Conn.-based William W. Backus Hospital welcomed interventional spine specialist Gaurav Kapur, MD.
Here are six things to know.
1. Edward Hargus, MD, the primary physician at the Backus Pain Management & Palliative Care Service center, retired in 2017. Dr. Hargus' retirement left about 150 patients being treated for cancer-related pain, back injuries, nerve damage and other disorders without a permanent physician, according to The Day.
2. The clinic has been run by temporary physicians since September, The Day reports. Dr. Kapur will begin seeing patients next month.
3. According to Backus Medical Director Nader Bahadory, DO, there is a nationwide shortage of pain specialists because the number of physicians completing pain fellowships has not risen to meet patient demand.
4. Dr. Kapur received his medical degree from the Indira Gandhi Medical School in India. He underwent pain and spine fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic.
5. Dr. Kapur is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation with subspecialty certification in pain medicine. He performs interventional spine procedures under fluoroscopy, ultrasound-guided soft tissue and joint injections and limited pain medication management.
6. He is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the North American Spine Society, Spine Intervention Society and American Association of Physicians from India. Dr. Kapur speaks English, Hindi and Punjabi.
