Total disc replacement has become a popular motion-preserving option for spine surgeons and patients. Here are five key numbers to know:

$45,901 The average cost of a disc replacement in Columbus Ohio, one of the most expensive U.S. cities to have the procedure. Of the 30 most populous U.S. cities, Oklahoma City had the lowest average cost for disc replacement ($19,438).

$8.56 billion The projected value of the artificial disc replacement market by 2032, according to research by S&S Insider. Between 2024 and 2032 the market's compound annual growth rate is estimated to be 15.10%.

25 The number of years total disc replacement has been performed in the U.S. Scott Blumenthal, MD, performed the first artificial disc replacement in the U.S. in March 2000.

1.26%The rate of lumbar disc replacement revisions since 2000, according to a study out of Plano-based Texas Back Institute. The study examined data from 2,141 lumbar disc replacements. In a similar study from the practice, cervical disc replacement had a 1.48% revision rate.
