Fabien Bitan, MD, performed an M6 artificial cervical disc replacement surgery on a 29-year-old woman Aug. 2, BioSpace reports.
Dr. Bitan, a spine surgery chief at New York City-based Lenox Hill Hospital, is believed to be the fourth surgeon to perform the procedure in the U.S. and the first surgeon on the East Coast to do so.
The M6-C disc is a spinal fusion alternative. It is the only disc currently available in the U.S. that enables compression at the implanted level.
The disc has been available outside of the U.S. for some time. Outside of the U.S., surgeons have used the disc in more than 45,000 procedures.
