Neurosurgery Comanagement Program Cuts Costs $1,439 Per Admission

Spine

A comanagement program between neurosurgeons and hospitalists at a teaching hospital shows a reduced cost per admission, according to an article published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

The retrospective study gathered data for adults admitted to the neurosurgery service at a university-based teaching hospital over a three year period. The researchers studied 4,203 patients who were admitted before the comanagement program began, and 3,393 after implementation. There were 988 who were comanaged.

The researchers found no change in patient mortality rate, readmission or length of stay as a result of the comanagement program, and there were no consistent improvements in patient satisfaction. However, nurses reported strong perceived improvements in care quality after the program was implemented and the hospital reduced costs by $1,439 per admission.
