A study recently published in Spine outlined the predictors of postoperative pain in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients.
Researchers examined 50 patients with AIS who underwent spinal fusion and were tracked through six months postoperatively. The researchers found:
• Pain declined with time
• 22 percent of patients experienced pain at or above baseline through six months postoperatively
• More baseline pain and anxiety predicted slower improvement
• Greater confidence in pain control ability predicted quicker declines in pain
